Memorial Hospital proactively enhances screening measures at main entrance for patients, visitors, hospital teams

Memorial Hospital of South Bend recently installed a walk-through threat detection screening system staffed by trained officers at the main entrance as a part of enhanced security measures.

Patients, visitors and associates coming to the main entrance walk through the screening system without needing to empty pockets or open bags. Visitors obtain a photo-ID visitor pass after going through the screening system and providing a valid picture ID to Memorial staff.

The screening system — similar to those used at schools and stadiums — is identical to the one that has been in operation at the entrance of Memorial’s Emergency Department since October 2023.

“This proactive measure works in concert with our existing safety protocols at the hospital,” said Jason Stefaniak, Memorial Hospital Chief of Police and Director of Security. “Hospitals are meant to be safe havens. This addition enhances our ability to provide a safe and secure place for our patients, visitors and colleagues.”

The addition of the main entrance screening system, which has two walk-through lanes, is not related to any particular event, Stefaniak added. “Like many hospitals across the country – including several children’s hospitals – our interest in this added security measure is in reducing risks and delivering outstanding care.”

We appreciate our community’s support in providing a safe place to benefit our patients, visitors and hospital teams.
