The State and Local Response to the Opioid Epidemic is happening on Monday, Sept. 25. 

There are not one, not two, but THREE events planned that day, including two discussions at Elkhart General Hospital. Here are the details:

• A clinically focused CME discussion on opioid addiction is happening from noon to 1 p.m. at Patel Auditorium, Elkhart General.
• A conversation about the social impacts of opioid addiction will take place from 3 to 4 p.m., also at Patel Auditorium at EGH.
• The COMMUNITY event — a panel discussion about opioid addiction with a question-and-answer session, is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Lerner Theater in downtown Elkhart.

Presenters include:

• Jim McClelland, executive director for Drug Prevention, Treatment and Enforcement for the State of Indiana
• Don J. Selzer, MD, MS, president of the Indiana Chapter of the American College of Surgeons

Here’s another event you won’t want to miss…

The 2017 Mary Morris Leighton Lecture is happening at 7 p.m. Oct. 10. It’s entitled, “Letting Go: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction.” Here are some details…

What had happened to my beautiful boy? To our family? What did I do wrong? Those are the wrenching questions that haunted every moment of David Sheff’s journey through his son Nic’s addiction to drugs and tentative steps toward recovery. Addicts don’t stop caring about the people they love. But as addiction takes over, it commands a person’s mind and body to the point where all they can think about is getting the drugs into their system while loved ones are sidelined, feeling helpless. In this powerful presentation, David Sheff shares the story of his son Nic’s addiction and the impact it has had on their family. Based on his New York Times best-selling book, and his son Nic’s bestseller, “Tweak: Growing up on Methamphetamines,” this father and son tell the story from both sides of addiction.

Nursing Fairs are scheduled at Oct. 13 from noon to 7 p.m. in the main lobby at Memorial Hospital and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Patel Auditorium at Elkhart General.

The very next day — Saturday, Oct. 14, you can attend the Happy Baby Yoga Event benefitting NICU Babies. 

From 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., you can do yoga at Beacon Health & Fitness, 3221 Beacon Parkway, near Capital Avenue in Mishawaka.

Getting all this down?

Here’s one more…

A new Service of Remembrance is scheduled for 3 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Memorial Hospital auditorium for families whose loved ones passed away on any of Memorial Hospital’s adult inpatient units.

Families also will have time to visit with the staff who cared for their loved ones. The hour-long service will include a reading of the names of the deceased, poems and music.
