What This Girl Did for Her Grandma Will Amaze You

It’s pretty much impossible to not love 9-year-old Cecelia Farrell. That’s because when after her grandmother, Kathy Towner, underwent a mastectomy to remove cancer in her left breast, Cecilia thought of a way to honor one of her favorite people. Kathy was diagnosed with breast cancer at Memorial Regional Breast Cancer Center and underwent surgery at Memorial.

The brown-eyed girl with freckles had the creative idea to make bracelets that she could then sell. She cut toilet paper rolls into sections that were then formed into bracelets and decorated with colorful tape.

After making several bracelets one summer afternoon, Cecilia took her inventory to the front of the driveway and promptly started selling them to friends, neighbors and passing motorists. Her plan: donate all the proceeds to the Breast Care Center in honor of her grandma.

Cece’s fundraising efforts didn’t end there. The fourth grader raised even more money for the Breast Care Center when she performed face painting before a Notre Dame football game, drawing everything from hearts to pirates.

Kathy was blown away by her granddaughter’s kindness and ingenuity. All told, Cecilia raised just over $64 for the Breast Care Center.

“Oh my gosh,” Kathy gushed. “She’s the kind of girl who wants to do something for someone else. What she did brings tears to my eyes.”

Cecilia considers her grandma one of her best friends.

“I love spending time with her because we laugh so much. I just wanted to do something to help her,” explains Cecilia.

It’s easy to see why Kathy admires her granddaughter so much. “What she did makes me want to be like her.”
