In the Spotlight: Central Sterile Processing
The Sterile Processing Departments at Elkhart General Hospital and Memorial Hospital clean, disinfect, sterilize, assemble and store medical instruments, equipment and supplies to ensure the highest level of safety for our patients. Along with instrument processing, Sterile Processing orders and maintains the stock of frequently used implanted items such as grafts, plates, screws and reconstructive items.
The staff also assembles the disposable items specific to each patient’s surgical procedure, from the prep solution to the bandages, along with stocking and ordering supplies. Specialized training and expertise are required in this area that works 24/7 with Surgical Services and other departments.
Additionally, Sterile Processing follows evidence-based practices, outlined by the Association for the Advancement in Medical Instrumentation, Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and The Joint Commission, among others, to safeguard patients.
