Beacon Health and Fitness Flag Raising Ceremony
Beacon Health System held a flag raising ceremony on October 8, 2015, to mark the beginning of construction of the new Beacon Health & Fitness facility. The new facility will be locatedin Mishawaka on Beacon Parkway off Capital Avenue and the I-80 toll road exit. In a time where ‘health is the new medicine,’ this new facility will empower people to take charge of their own health and positively impact their health, their longevity and their quality of life. The new facility is slated to open in 2016.
Beacon Health & Fitness is different from other area health facilities, due to its commitment to offering not only the very latest advances in health and fitness, but to the prevention and management of disease and injury, including physical therapy, sports medicine, cardiac fitness, exercise for arthritis, yoga for cancer patients and survivors, and more.
The new facility will offer the components of a world-class fitness facility for people who may not be under medical supervision but are looking to stay fit and healthy, including cardiovascular equipment, strength equipment, lap pool, running/walking track, and personal trainers. In addition, the Mishawaka facility will include a sports performance clinic unique to the Michiana community.
“More and more we’re moving toward a health model where we help people stay healthy and prevent injury and illness in the first place,” says Philip A. Newbold, CEO of Beacon Health System. “Beacon Health & Fitness fits right into this model of care and will be an important part of our mission for years to come.”
And, according to the Partnership for Prevention, unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and physical inactivity, cause diseases that account for 38 percent of all deaths in the United States. Along with that, Indiana has the seventh highest obesity rate in the country according to The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America.
“Being active, and fitting physical activity into part of your everyday life, is one of the most important things we can do to live longer, healthier lives,” adds Newbold. “Beacon Health & Fitness is one more way we’re empowering people to make physical activity a top priority and to make healthy options as convenient and accessible as possible.”
This $15 million project will expand upon the services that have been available at the Memorial Health & Lifestyle Center (HLC) for 35 years. The HLC location in downtown South Bend will also be renamed Beacon Health & Fitness and members will be welcome at both facilities.
