The Lewis family: A story of inner strength

The Lewis family: A story of inner strength

Siblings Marvin, Naudia and Kendra Lewis were all born with sickle cell anemia, an inherited blood disorder for which there is no cure. Blood cells become rigid and sticky, which can slow or block blood flow. By age eight, Marvin had a stroke and by age 13 he had three brain surgeries. He also has Dactylitis, Moya Moya disease. His sister Naudia battles sickle cell anemia and Moya Moya disease. Kendra is the youngest and also faces difficulty because of sickle cell anemia, such as one bout of influenza A and B, followed by pneumonia. The family lives in Gary, and travels weekly to South Bend for treatments. Mom, Yolanda, says it makes it easier to have a hospital that is on her side. “Beacon is the reason my kids are still alive,” said Yolanda.
