Accolades
We are proud to perform more than 2,000 heart procedures annually. Many services are ‘firsts’ and ‘onlys’ in Indiana or in our region – like the region’s first structural heart program, performing TAVR since 2014, the region’s first and only thrombectomy-capable stroke center, the only program in Michiana to perform MitraClip™ procedures, the first local program offering MONARCH robotic bronchoscopy and many minimally invasive procedures. Beacon has performed over 1,000 minimally invasive surgeries (including TAVR, Watchman™ and MitraClip for structural heart and vascular needs). We are also the leader in complex valve reconstruction, with more than 20 years of experience in this minimally invasive, small incision valve surgery.
Skills and capabilities key points
Interventional cardiologists and structural heart team:
- Elkhart General Hospital and Memorial Hospital of South Bend are staffed by board-certified interventional cardiologists. Annually, they perform more than 2,500 diagnostic cardiac catheterizations and more than 800 coronary interventions.
- Regional leader in coronary intervention, which includes balloon angioplasty, stent placement and atherectomy.
- Beacon was the first program in a 70-mile area to introduce the TAVR procedure, with Elkhart General Hospital being the very first hospital in 70-mile radius to perform TAVR.
Vascular Surgery & Interventional Radiology:
- Fellowship trained providers who stay current on techniques in this specialized area.
- Our vascular physicians have decades of experience and have been providing team-based treatments in highly specialized hybrid operating rooms equipped with state-of-the-art X-ray technology for over 10 years.
Cardiothoracic program:
- Our Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Program is one of a handful of programs in the country in which major procedures are performed from the side of the chest without going through the sternum.
- For open lung procedures, we offer MONARCH robotic bronchoscopy – a method to diagnose lung nodules more accurately and with lower complications than other procedures – able to diagnose and stage cancer at the same time, which speeds up diagnosis to treatment.
Stroke care:
- The first thrombectomy-capable stroke center in Indiana AND the only one in 70-mile radius.
- Stroke team offers complete, ongoing care from admittance through rehabilitation.
- Memorial Hospital is certified as an Advanced Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center by The Joint Commission.
- Elkhart General Hospital is certified as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission.
