Home Away from Home

With the exciting announcement that the Ronald McDonald House broke ground on its new location in the Skyway Building across from Memorial Children’s Hospital, we thought it was a good time to share more about the awesome work they do.

Ronald McDonald Family Room® is a place of refuge and comfort for families with children being treated at Memorial Children’s Hospital. Located on the third floor of Memorial, it has served as a home away from home for families since 2002.

Screen Shot 2016-06-14 at 1.52.29 PMSo while our dedicated Memorial Children’s Hospital staff is taking care of sick and injured children, the Ronald McDonald staff and its amazing 150 volunteers are taking care of their families. In 2015 alone, the staff of the Ronald McDonald Family Room welcomed and cared for more than 6,000 families.

The Family Room features three bedrooms for overnight guests, two full bathrooms with complimentary toiletries, washer and dryer, comfortable sitting areas and a fully stocked kitchen. Families can stay overnight for free to be near their child, and can also use the space to refresh and relax. The space, open seven days a week, 365 days a year, also provides a sense of camaraderie and an emotional support system by connecting people to each other in times of stress.

“We are honored and blessed,” says Becky Summers, CEO and President of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Michiana, “to serve the families of the children who receive specialized treatment and care from the team at Memorial Children’s Hospital.”

When the new Ronald McDonald House opens in 2017, it will allow the staff to serve more families –– at least 6,205 more nights each year than in the past.
