Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Beacon’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides comprehensive critical care for newborns with life-threatening medical or surgical needs.

Our NICU is Level III – which means we offer an advanced level of care for babies born prematurely as well as babies born with a critical illness. Your baby has access to doctors trained in a full range of pediatric subspecialties. Our NICU has respiratory support and advanced imaging. You can have peace of mind that we are prepared to care for the sickest babies.

Our 36-bed unit is the referral center for North Central Indiana and a portion of Southwestern Michigan. Each year, we care for 400 newborns born at Memorial or transported from other regional hospitals by our NICU’s transport team.

Our internationally recognized NICU is located in the same building as the Memorial Special Care Obstetrics Unit to facilitate rapid response if an emergency arises during childbirth. The unit offers couplet-care rooms that allow mom and baby to be cared for in the same room as long as mom is stable. Being close to the baby helps reduce stress and anxiety for the parents.

Our NICU Team

The NICU care team is comprised of Board-Certified neonatologists, pediatricians, neonatal nurse practitioners, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, a social worker and a parent care coordinator. As a family-centered NICU, we also consider you an important member of your baby’s care team.
