Clinical/Non-clinical Observation Guidelines

Beacon Health System invites adults ages 17 and older who are interested in health care careers to complete a clinical or non-clinical observation.

Clinical/Non-clinical Observation (formerly Job Shadow) at Beacon is a health care career observation experience. It is a minimum of three or a maximum of 40 hours, but no more than five days in duration.

The only exceptions to the age specification are student applicants under 18 who participate through a contracted school program. The coordinator of the program will arrange the schedule.

Those who wish to observe at Beacon must meet the following criteria for approval. For individual applicants, arrangements must be organized by the applicant and approved by the Manager/Director of the hospital unit and/or Office Manager for the Beacon Medical Group practice before sending in your application materials.

A. Submit the following forms to the respective representative before observation:

  • Clinical Observation Application
  • Clinical Observation Release Form and/or Personal Loss Injury Form
  • Confidentiality Statement (HIPAA Form)
  • Photo Consent (optional)

B. Provide the following health screening information with application:

Tuberculosis test

  • A Quantiferon Gold serology test (QFT) is the preferred method of screening.
  • Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) results will be accepted for:
    1. 2 step TST process (2 separate tests) completed within 12 months. First TST completed within 12 months of observation experience and second TST completed within 30 days of observation experience. Tests must be more than one week apart.
    2. Records must include dates administered, dates read, and results in millimeters.

TB tests can be done at your university health center, your family physician’s office, or your local health department.

Required vaccinations 

  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR 2 doses)
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap)
  • Varicella – age 19-64, 2 doses (0, 4-8wks)
  • Annual Influenza vaccination

C. Submitting materials:

You may fax or email the required documentation to the respective entity representative when you have completed everything. Processing paperwork takes approximately 2-3 weeks from the time of submission. You will receive an email in regards to the next steps after they are processed.

Applications with partial requirements will not be processed or approved until all documentation is submitted. This documentation and paperwork protect you and our patients. Thank you for your cooperation.
