Overview

Celiac disease is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Over time, the reaction creates inflammation that damages the small intestine's lining. It also prevents absorption of some nutrients, a condition known as malabsorption.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of celiac disease are diarrhea, tiredness and weight loss. Other symptoms may include bloating and gas, belly pain, nausea, constipation, and vomiting. Celiac disease also can cause symptoms that are not related to the digestive system, such as skin rashes and joint pain.

Treatments

A strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.
