Description

A mild condition in which the liver doesn't properly process bilirubin.

Overview

Gilbert syndrome is a condition that runs in families. It's often discovered by accident, such as when someone has a blood test. It happens when the liver can't process bilirubin properly.

Symptoms

Gilbert syndrome may cause the whites of the eyes to have a yellow tinge due to the buildup of bilirubin. There also may be a yellowing of the skin. This change may be easier or harder to see depending on your skin color.

Treatments

Gilbert syndrome is typically harmless, and treatment isn't needed.
