A noncancerous tumorlike growth.
Hamartoma is a noncancerous tumorlike growth. It can happen in a number of places in the body. There are many kinds of hamartoma, including melanocytic nevi and hemangioma.
A hamartoma may be harmless. However, it can cause pressure, a blockage, or an infection.
Hamartomas can sometimes cause symptoms. Symptoms depend on the location and size of the hamartoma. Many hamartomas do not cause noticeable symptoms. When they do cause them, it's usually because the hamartomas are pressing on nearby tissues or organs.
Surgery may be needed.
