Description

A short-term condition in which the intestine is not able to contract and move waste out of the body.

Overview

Ileus may happen after abdominal or pelvic surgery. Certain medicines or diseases, such as Parkinson's, also may cause this condition.

Symptoms

Symptoms include belly cramps, upset stomach, vomiting, loose stools, constipation, gas and bloating.

Treatments

Ileus is treated by passing a tube from the nose to the stomach or small intestine to suck out air and relieve abdominal swelling while waiting for regular bowel function to return.
