A growth that starts on the clear tissue of the eye, called the conjunctiva, that can spread to the dome-shaped covering of the eye, called the cornea.
Overview
A pterygium is a noncancerous, triangular-shaped growth that may happen on one or both eyes. It's more common in people who spend a lot of time in the sun, such as people who work outdoors. Pterygium is sometimes called surfer's eye.
Symptoms
The growth is painless and may be slightly raised with blood vessels that are clear to see. It may cause irritation and possibly affect vision.
Treatments
Treatment usually isn't needed. Lubricating eye drops may help with eye irritation. If vision is affected, surgery may help.
