Mother/Baby Unit
After you and your loved ones have welcomed your new baby into the world and spent time together in the birthing suite, you will be transferred to the Mother/Baby Unit. Family members develop skills in baby care with the guidance of their nurse as she cares for both mother and baby in the nurturing environment of mother’s private room. A physical assessment, hearing screen and other testing will assure your baby the best possible start. Lactation consultants will visit you in the hospital as needed to assist with breastfeeding.
We smooth the transition to home with individualized instruction and our customized care plan for each family.
Also, we offer classes and specialized services to help new parents and siblings learn how to best care for their new baby and each other.
Mother Matters
Following the birth of a baby, a wide range of emotions is possible. Often there are the expected feelings of excitement and joy, along with relief that the day has finally arrived. But, despite the best possible preparation, mothers may also feel overwhelmed, uncertain, frustrated or anxious.
Sometimes, despite the support of loved ones, these feelings can become overwhelming. Mother Matters is a phone support and referral service of Memorial Childbirth Center. If you find you are experiencing tearfulness or feel like something is just not right during your pregnancy or after your baby is born, please call 574.647.3243 to speak with a specially trained nurse.
Pastoral and Social Services
Simply talking through feelings with someone other than a family member or friend can be helpful to relieve difficult postpartum feelings and emotions. A chaplain is available for mothers and families 24/7 to provide support before, during and after the birth experience.
Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Services
A little extra help goes a long way. WIC Services include breastfeeding support, supplemental food vouchers and nutrition counseling for new mothers and babies. Call 574.647.2100 to learn more.
Beds and Britches, Etc. (B.A.B.E)
Beds and Britches, Etc. (B.A.B.E) is a program that promotes responsible parenting by offering incentives to expectant parents.
Parents and parents-to-be earn B.A.B.E. coupons that can be redeemed at either of two B.A.B.E. stores for infant-related merchandise such as diapers, clothing, strollers and cribs. Participants earn the coupons by keeping prenatal appointments, attending parenting classes, taking their child(ren) to get immunized, and other activities that improve family health and child development.
