How to Start a Running Program for Sunburst
Sunburst Races are May 31.
Start training now by follow these 10 tips:
- Make a plan. Decide when you are going to train, how often you can commit to training during the week/weekend, and how long you plan to train each day.
- Create a routine. Don’t just say, ‘I’ll get to the gym three times a week,” because you may just keep putting it off until there aren’t three days left in the week to train.
- Start slowly. Start walking three times a week for 20 minutes, then begin to increase the duration of your walking before you increase the intensity. Begin to add running gradually, by doing intervals of running/walking each day. Or, you can choose to walk one day, then run a different day.
- Keep the juices flowing. Drink water as you train so you’ll be familiar with drinking and running on race day.
- Know your path. Get familiar with the course ahead of time. You might even consider training on it.
- Mix it up. Once you have committed to your training, try to cross train with some strength training once or twice a week.
- Find a friend. It always helps to train with a friend, especially on those days when you just don’t want to train. And there will be those days.
- Reach out. It’s important you stretch after you run/walk, helping to prevent injuries.
- Shut-eye is good. It’s important to take days off from training and to get extra sleep.
- Eat well. You’re getting healthier through exercise, so help your body by choosing complex carbohydrates, proteins, and lots of fruits and vegetables.
