Being All She Can Be

post-tiffy-sWhen duty calls, Tiffany Sommers responds. Tiffany, a medical assistant at MedPoint Urgent Care Center Elkhart, is a specialist E4 in the Army National Guard who was recently awarded The Army Commendation Medal for exceptional meritorious service during her two-week summer training in southern Indiana.

In her unit based in Elkhart, the 190th Motor Transportation Battalion, Tiffany is a food service specialist. While at Camp Atterbury earlier this summer, she was given the role of Battalion Mess Sergeant. She was responsible for overseeing food preparation for nearly 200 soldiers for the two weeks, as well as managing the seven soldiers helping to facilitate all the meals.

Military leadership counted on Tiffany to make sure all the meals were prepared on time and the kitchen/dining room were well kept. “It was a lot of work. I would wake up at 3 a.m. and go to bed at 11 p.m.,” she recalls. “I had to step up. It was exhausting, but it was worth it because it showed me that everything we do has a purpose.”

Her hard work and leadership paid off with the Army Commendation Medal, that was given because she performed “at a level beyond the expectations of her leadership and provided an outstanding example for her peers.”

Tiffany joined the Army National Guard as a junior at Concord High School, hoping to experience new adventures and develop more self-discipline. With only one year left on her enlistment, she’ll have to decide whether to reenlist.

“I’ve enjoyed my military experience. I’ve learned so much and grown as a person,” she says. “It has even helped me in my role at MedPoint. I am honored to serve my country and my community.”
