Memory Maker
Thanks to the generosity of the South Bend Silver Hawks, staff of Beacon Health System and the community, nearly $10,000 was raised for the Memorial Children’s Hospital through the Home Run for Life program this summer. Home Run for Life celebrates and honors children who have dealt with major health issues. Each month, a different patient of Memorial Children’s Hospital received the amazing opportunity to circle the bases during a game.
Sadly, our August participant in the Home Run for Life, Zachary Talley, died Aug. 23. While hundreds of people applauded at the Silver Hawks game, Zachary was able to enjoy the thrilling experience of rounding the bases one last time. The Silver Hawks were pleased with this first-ever promotion.
“Each month we wanted to provide a selected child and family with a unique experience that will create memories that last a lifetime,” emphasized Joe Hart, South Bend Silver Hawks President. “We understood that as a result of some health challenges, some of the kids may never have an opportunity to play baseball or softball, so we wanted to provide a special moment where they could feel what it is like to hit a ‘Home Run.’”
“We also wanted to showcase the amazing work of the doctors, nurses and staff at Memorial Children’s Hospital. Our community needs to realize that we have such a tremendous asset in Memorial, and we felt this promotion would be a great way to highlight all the great work that it does for the children of Michiana.”
