New Look Coming to Memorial
Roundabouts are coming to Memorial Hospital’s campus next year as part of South Bend’s Smart Streets Initiative. Two roundabouts will be built – one at the intersection of Michigan and Bartlett and two blocks north at the intersection of Marion Street and Michigan. The goal is to start roundabout construction in spring of 2016 and have them done by fall of 2016.
Smart Streets is an effort to improve the role of streets within South Bend by designing streets that enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. In preparation for the Michigan/Bartlett roundabout, there is a three-phase construction project taking place this year along Bartlett Street and in front of Memorial’s main entrance. Bartlett, between Lafayette Boulevard and Michigan Street, is being reconfigured slightly to the north. New visitor/valet parking lots will then be built to the north and south of the reconfigured road, says Larry Lies, Memorial Director of Projects and Construction.
Access to Memorial’s main entrance, Bartlett Parking Garage and the loading dock will remain open throughout construction this year.
Project benefits include more visitor parking closer to the hospital, a more aesthetically pleasing appearance and a safer environment for motorists and pedestrians.
The City of South Bend is funding the roundabout construction as well as all the roadwork around Memorial this year.
