And the Winning Team is…

IMG_3283

247 packets of crayons of collected by BMG’s Central Billing! Miyako Coleman and Mary Mark of BMG’s Central Billing and Child Life Specialist Tracy Byler.

When the smoke cleared, the winning department for the first-ever Crayon Wars was Beacon Medical Group Central Billing.

The real winners, however, are the many pediatric patients who will enjoy the whopping 1,617 boxes of crayons donated to Memorial Children’s Hospital!

Spearheaded by the Child Life Program at Memorial, the Crayon Wars was an effort spanned over two weeks that encouraged departments to donate as many boxes of crayons – with pizza going to the team that collected the most boxes.

On March 17, various departments and groups within Beacon Health System “surrendered” their crayon boxes, including:

  • BMG Central Billing = 247 packets of crayons = winners of a department pizza party paid for by Jen Tonkovich, Director of Pediatrics, PICU and Pediatric Hematology Oncology Clinic
  • Emergency Care Center = 240 packets
  • Beacon Medical Group Core Lab = 239
  • 5th Floor Rehab = 213
  • Epworth Center = 212
  • Interdepartmental Congress = 169
  • 10 South = 81
  • Admitting = 75
  • Outpatient Surgical Center = 36
  • 3HB/7 = 35
  • Adult ICU = 34
  • Human Resources = 13
  • Miscellaneous boxes = 263

“As our team reflected on the reasons why we held this challenge – to celebrate the pediatric patients we so dearly love and to make their hospitalization manageable – we were most impressed by how the support from our Beacon Health System family came together for the same kids, for the same reasons!” says Tracy Byler, CCLS, Coordinator of the Child Life Program. “We were amazed at the huge number of crayons we collected and we look forward to doing this again next year. The winners enjoyed their pizza party and while doing so they vowed to double their numbers for next year – so the challenge has been made!”

Thank you to the Child Life staff for their efforts in organizing the first Crayon Wars:
