Zakkai and Zakkar: Home Run for Life – July
On September 14, 2011, twin boys Zakkai and Zakkar were born prematurely. Weighing just 1 pound 14 ounces, and 2 pounds 6 ounces, the newborns struggled with breathing issues as they were cared for in the Memorial Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Their mother, Nafe Kapeni, spent most of her time in the NlCU with them, singing to them and praying for her baby boys.
Doctors and nurses worked to help the twins grow stronger, and 75 days after their early arrival, the twins were ready to go home.
“Before they discharged us, I told them that I didn’t think I’d be able to do everything,” says Nafe. Dedicated nurses showed her how to care for the infants, and she gained hope from other parents who had been in her situation.
Today, the boys are happy, healthy and active. Zakkai loves technology and playing games on the computer. Zakkar is interested in music and absolutely loves to sing and dance.
Nafe knows that if it wasn’t for the help, care and support from the staff of Memorial Children’s Hospital, the twins might not have had the opportunity to grow into fun-loving four-year-olds. The caring staff also inspired Nafe to become a nurse herself!
“Love heals,” says Nafe. “The care you give heals and it makes a big, big difference in kids’ lives.”
