Executive Profiles – Phil Newbold and Dr. Vince Henderson
Phil Newbold, CEO, Beacon Health System
Among the many qualities that describe Beacon CEO Phil Newbold, the best might be his passion for trying new things.
He is recognized as the first health care CEO to come from a marketing/planning background, an early pioneer in establishing a community tithing policy at Memorial Hospital to achieve a healthier community and among the first hospital CEOs in the country to integrate Innovation into the hospital environment.
For Phil, it’s not about maintaining the status quo, but always striving to improve, innovate and grow.
“It’s great to be part of an organization that works to save lives, heal people and help people along their life’s journey. Health care is spiritual work,” says Phil.
An Ohio native, Phil’s academic background includes pre-engineering, mathematics, business, health care administration, quality improvement and Innovation.
While he enjoys learning things firsthand, he also relishes the opportunity to share his knowledge with others. He teaches at the University of Notre Dame, the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and at dozens of national conferences.
“Sharing what we have learned at Beacon is my way of giving back to others who are just beginning their leadership journeys.”
Though he can point to many, Phil identifies his greatest professional achievement as the community-tithing program he initiated at Memorial Hospital more than 25 years ago. The program has helped build healthier communities throughout Michiana, particularly addressing the health needs of the underserved.
As many know, Phil is about as active as anyone you’ll meet. He has completed an astounding 19 Ironman triathlons, more than 30 marathons and in June, he finished his 28th Sunburst race. When he’s not running, swimming, biking or kayaking, he can be found at home tending to his gardens, a new beehive and Koi pond. In addition, Phil and his wife, Mary, structure their vacations around hiking and exploring the outdoors.
And as much as he loves the outdoors, Phil loves his family even more. Married for 43 years, Phil and Mary have three grown children: John, Anne and Kate.
While he has no plans to retire anytime soon, Phil knows what he wants his legacy to be: “That I helped encourage people and organizations to always reach for better, reimagine the future and use Innovation principles in life and at work.”
Vince Henderson, MD, Beacon Medical Group President
A graduate of Memorial Family Medicine Residency in 1983, Vincent Henderson, MD, has risen to the top of the region’s largest physician group, Beacon Medical Group.

Dr. Henderson, who formerly served as Board Chairman to Beacon Medical Group’s Physicians Governance Council, believes it’s an exciting time to be part of health care and Beacon’s growing group of physicians.

Just knowing that Beacon Medical Group is moving forward in the health care industry is rewarding. I like being part of an organization where evolutions and innovation are part of its core in the changing environment of health care.”
