Elkhart General ED Earns High Patient Scores
In June, the Elkhart General Emergency Department received some of the highest patient satisfaction scores of any hospital in the nation. Thanks to an amazing staff, the ED scored in the 93rd percentile overall, 97th percentile for nursing courtesy and 99th percentile for nursing overall, according to Press Ganey reports.
The Elkhart General Emergency Department is comprised of 25 physicians, 75 nurses, 20 techs and 40 administrative assistants.
“We have a caring staff of nurses and physicians who deliver quality care in a compassionate manner every day, but the report card hasn’t reflected that in the past,” says Susan Miller, Emergency Department director. “Then in June – bingo! Our report card showed us what happens here all the time.”
“Patient satisfaction has been our focus for a few years,” says David Van Ryn, MD, a 30-year veteran of the Emergency Department. “We care for people on the worst day of their lives, and they are only here for a very brief time in the ED. So the ultimate challenge is blending lifesaving care and medical care with customer service and taking care of patients and families. I think our commitment to teamwork is reflected in our scores.”
