An apple a day? Here’s the real scoop

background of red ripe apples

Today is National Eat a Red Apple Day. Who knew?

Besides making us hungry, we became curious about a very recognizable expression: Does an apple a day really keep the doctor away?

Christopher Hall, MD, Beacon Medical Group Cleveland Road family physician, replied with an emphatic yes to this age-old question.

“An apple a day can help irritable bowel syndrome, gallstones, cholesterol and blood pressure,” Dr. Hall said. “The fiber, antioxidants and flavonoids in apples can help reduce your cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as the risks associated with certain types of cancer. Another reason to eat an apple a day? Because it tastes good!”
