My husband and I were in search of a new physician since our past one was getting close to retirement. We wanted someone close to home, and found Dr. Amrhein was accepting new patients. Not knowing what to expect for our first visits, we found Dr. Amrhein to be absolutely wonderful. He was extremely personable and friendly. He was very relaxed and joked with each of us at our respective visits. He had reviewed our records before seeing us and was well informed of our histories. He took time to get to know us and even personally walked my husband down to the lab to have some blood tests performed. After my husbands visit, he told me that he thought that was the “most enjoyable doctor’s visit that I have ever had.” That was even after 2 shots, blood draw and physical exam. thank you, Dr. Amrhein for making our visits so enjoyable. We are both looking forward to spending many years to come with you as our physician.

Let me begin with a thank you to Dr. Benavente, Dr. Michalski, the surgical team, nursing, ER staff, and so many more from my myself, my husband, and my five small children. I apologize I haven’t done this sooner.

My story begins almost 2 years ago at Mayo in Rochester, MN where I had major surgery for Crohns disease. The surgery went as planned and I returned home to Indiana shortly after. A week later I walked in to Elkhart ER, where I also work as a nurse, with excruciating abdominal pain. Dr. Michalski entered the room and quickly assessed something was wrong and to CT I went. Shortly after enters Dr. Benavente who is sending me to the operating room for a unexpected complication from my surgery. He was straight and to the point, I had to go to surgery. My husband, family, and ER family stood in the halls as I was whisked away to surgery. There was no time to for second opinions or to be transferred back to Mayo. Surgery needed to happen now.

Loving and caring hands were everywhere even when I was not at my best. I was tired and sick and I didn’t want to be in the hospital any longer. I wanted to go home and see my kids. I was angry about the ileostomy that was temporary but was still there. I had more blood hanging, multiple IV lines, a lovely catheter, ETCO2 monitor in my nose, and the worst by far was the NG. I had very patient nurses that cared for me through out my stay and I was reassured I was doing well each day.

To be on the other side of patient care is a humbling experience and every nurse was excellent that came to my bedside. They tolerated that I was a nurse with grace and humor. They gave me space when I needed to be left alone and listened to me when I needed to talk to someone. Most importantly, from the physicians to the staff I was treated with caring hands and respect. I will forever be grateful to everyone that played a part in my recovery.

I am a better nurse for my experiences and I do believe more now then ever that Elkhart Hospital’s physicians, surgeons, and staff are the best out there.

You were there in the darkest and brightest day of our life. When (my daughter) was born with Spina Bifida you shared this news with such compassion. Our life was a NICU whirlwind for 2 weeks. You made sure I understood what was going on and you made sure we were doing well. You eased the mind of my very worried father. You empowered my husband to continue being a great dad. Two weeks ago, I brought my friend to the ER at Memorial. It happened that the doc was my friends PCP! She was pleased to know it was someone who was familiar. He took a lot of time with her and collaborated with her neurologist more than once. His intuition was on the money. Without me having to tell him, he realized that anxiety and panic was really what was going on. He left no stone unturned. He gave her dental referrals, referrals for an in home safety assessment and referrals for PT and OT. I hope he never loses that compassion even when patients don’t follow through on his recommendations. This doc rocks!!

I suffered a dog attack (my own dog) with a bite wound on my wrist that needed stitches. It was early in the morning so my Family Dr office wasn’t open yet and I went to Medpoint. Dr Grellmann was so nice to me as he stitched and was very kind and gentle, talking to me the whole time during a horrific situation for me. Not long after that, I developed c. diff from the antibiotics, again it was at a time my PCP office wasn’t open so I went back to Medpoint. You can’t imagine how comforting it was to have Dr Grellmann take care of me again when I was so sick, actually feeling like I was sick enough that this could actually take my life. I can’t thank you enough for your wonderful and compassionate care, Dr Grellmann, at times when I couldn’t get in with my established PCP. I will never forget your kindness.
