Like grandmother, like granddaughter

Carol Duszynski volunteers at the cookie baking station and in the Breast Care Center at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

Her granddaughter, Samantha Krieg, RN, works in the Pediatrics Unit at Beacon Children’s Hospital.

“Since I retired, I was looking for some volunteer work to help people. A friend of mine told me about helping at Memorial Hospital,” Carol said.

So she decided to attend a volunteer meeting.

“I found all these openings. Cooking Baker popped out as I enjoy baking, so I checked that box,” Carol recalls. “To see people having a smile and to hear them say ‘thank you’ for a cookie makes the day a happy one.”

“I also volunteer in the breast center, and hearing ‘thanks’ from everyone makes it worth volunteering,” she adds. “It is important to hear the words ‘thank you.'”
