SJHS student gains valuable experience
The fact that there aren’t many high school students dedicated to volunteering at Memorial Hospital did not keep Taylor Hartman, a student at South Bend’s St. Joseph High School, from applying.
She volunteers as a surgery waiting room host.
“I have always had a passion for helping others and knew that I wanted to be a doctor, so I began volunteering at Memorial Hospital at the start of my junior year of high school,” Taylor says. “Through volunteering, I have been able to gain valuable work experience needed in this field, all while giving back and helping others.”
One of her favorite memories volunteering is also the longest single shift she has ever volunteered for: 24 hours.
“During this shift, we volunteered in escort, surgery waiting room, and the ER. It was a very tiring, yet exciting experience that I was able to learn a lot from and plan on doing again,” she says.
“Volunteering at Memorial has been very rewarding and is my favorite thing to do. I am extremely proud of the amount of time I have dedicated and the impact I have been able to make on the people there.”
