Mother, daughter, serve Elkhart together

After working at Elkhart General Hospital, Audrey Shaffer felt she should give back.

The best way to do that was become a volunteer.

“When a person comes in and they are frightened, I talk to them to help them feel calmer,” says Audrey, who volunteers in the Breast Care Center. “They leave feeling better because they had a chance to talk and someone listened to their fears while they were waiting. They leave with a sense of relief.”

Her daughter, Deb Trovadore, also volunteers at Elkhart General. Deb is a Redcoat.

“I volunteer because it gives me a great feeling to be able to help other people,” Deb says. “Every week, I am reminded that I do make a difference from the gratitude and appreciative comments.”
