Dr. Jason Marker tapped to lead national initiatives to combat physician burnout
Burnout is a problem that affects many in the healthcare profession, from medical students to practicing physicians to other specialists and clinicians.
Jason Marker, MD, Associate Director of the Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, recently received a tap on the shoulder from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians (IAFP) to help lead national initiatives to combat work-related stress in healthcare.
Dr. Marker was recently recognized as one of two “Boundary Breakers” in Indiana — physicians who empower change for family medicine and have been involved in activities poised to make a real difference for doctors and patients. He has been helping to train medical students and residents to become physician leaders with the tools and skills they need to combat the underlying causes of burnout in his role as the AAFP Foundation’s co-chair of the Emerging Leader Institute. He also provides leadership for the development and implementation of the AAFP’s new Leading Physician Well-Being Program.
“The COVID-19 pandemic heightened Dr. Marker’s awareness of physician well-being issues,” the AAFP stated about the honor bestowed on this small group of family doctors. “At a time when family physicians are putting themselves at risk of more burnout than ever by working on the frontlines of a national health crisis, Dr. Marker’s national leadership position is helping family doctors remain strong.”
Dr. Marker and his wife Kirsten were also named 2021 AAFP Foundation Philanthropists of the Year.
