Beacon Health Foundation awards scholarships to 70 recipients across the health system

Beacon Health System’s generous donors have again stepped up to help address the national nursing shortage, and congratulations are in order. The Beacon Health Foundation recently awarded more than $270,000 in scholarships to 70 applicants for 2022.

The scholarships typically support non-clinical associates who want to enter the nursing field, as well as nurses pursuing advanced degrees.

“Our donors are investing in Beacon nurses and future nurses because of how much they value the critical role that they play in providing vital care in our community,” said Susan King, president of the Beacon Health Foundation.

One of the Spring 2022 scholarship recipients, Raquel Cruz, said it seems that the “possibilities are endless” at Beacon. She hired on at Memorial in 2011 as a part-time Hospitality Associate in the Dietary Department. In less than a year she will take a full-time position as a Respiratory Therapist.

“Receiving the Beacon scholarship allowed my journey to be less difficult,” Cruz said. “I truly felt the support of the leadership team at Memorial Hospital, and I will be forever grateful.”

Scholarship recipient Heather Lamley, an Emergency Department technician at Elkhart General Hospital, agreed.

“I’m so happy to a part of the Beacon family,” Lamley said. “I am very appreciative of this scholarship opportunity. It puts me one step closer to reaching my goal of becoming a registered nurse.”
