Standing out: Memorial family medicine resident one of nation’s 12 best
Dr. Allyson DiMagno often earns her Memorial Hospital colleagues’ praise as a family medicine resident, and now the rest of the country is noticing.
The American Academy of Family Physicians, the largest professional association for family physicians, recently honored Dr. DiMagno with this year’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education. The award recognizes the country’s top 12 residents who exemplify a record of leadership activity, community involvement, social commitment, and exemplary patient care and interpersonal relationships.
She said she was “shocked” by the award, especially when she thinks about her talented co-residents at Memorial and the amazing work they are doing at Beacon and in the community.
“I think this award speaks to not only my accomplishments but the way this program has enabled me to pursue my passions and provides a supportive environment,” Dr. DiMagno said.
Originally from Fairport, NY, a small town outside of Rochester, Dr. DiMagno was drawn to the Memorial Family Medicine Residency program for its full spectrum of rotation options, with strong inpatient, pediatric, and obstetrics training, while also providing opportunities to pursue her passions of sports medicine and caring for the underserved at the E. Blair Warner Family Medicine Center.
“Memorial has provided an incredible place to learn medicine, both the bread-and-butter cases, but also the more rare medical conditions,” she said. “Throughout it all, I have felt supported from everyone at the hospital and the residency.”
On top of the normal rigors of residency, Dr. DiMagno is completing master’s level courses at Indiana University South Bend as part of the Memorial Family Medicine Residency program’s Health Services Management curriculum track.
Dr. DiMagno said the drive to learn as much as she can and provide exceptional patient care is what keeps her going through her busiest days.
“I know there will never be another time period where we have access to so many exceptional providers to help us learn the art of medicine,” she said.
It’s not the first time that Dr. DiMagno’s hard work and dedication to something she’s passionate about has fueled success. She was a standout basketball player at Cornell University, where she became the first player in school history, and only 10th player in Ivy League Conference history, to reach 1,300 career points and 900 career rebounds. She holds school records in rebounds and games played.
Dr. Kristine Jennings, director of the Memorial Family Medicine Residency program, said Dr. DiMagno’s collegiate and medical school achievements made her a top recruit to Memorial, impressing leaders there from her first day. This year her residency class chose her as vice chief resident, a unique leadership role in which she serves in the capacity of a junior faculty member.
“Since her time here she has modeled what it means to be a fantastic resident and clinician,” Dr. Jennings said. “At Memorial, we have known Dr. DiMagno to be extraordinary and we are thrilled that the rest of the world now knows it, too.”
