Beacon cardiology team surprises 100-year-old TAVR patient with birthday cake

Four years ago during a consultation, Regina Gizzi admitted she did not know how long she had to live.

“She told me she wanted to live to be 100, and that would not have been possible if we did not treat her,” said Dr. M. Shakil Aslam, Beacon Medical Group interventional cardiologist.

Dr. Aslam performed a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) that made it possible for Regina to recently visit his office for a surprise. The Memorial Hospital cardiac team surprised the spry patient with a special cake to celebrate her 100th birthday.

“She told me how she still enjoys her life, going out with her kids and grandkids for dinners,” Dr. Aslam said. “Regina enjoys watching football games and sometimes calls our Valve Clinic to leave the message, ‘Go Irish.’ She is a very strong woman. Her mental strength, attitude and very supportive family is what keeps her going. I can’t wait to see her again when she turns 101.”
