Medical Minute: Beacon athletic trainers keep student-athletes safe in extreme heat

The heat this week is very concerning when it comes to student-athletes playing sports.

Just ask our Beacon athletic trainers, who have been working on heat- and humidity-related recommendations and adjustments for each sport with their respective school administrators.

“If someone is not acclimatized to this type of heat and humidity, then it puts them at risk for heat illness. It can happen to those participating in an indoor sport, an outdoor sport, or even to those in band,” says Erin Foreman, MS, LAT, ATC, who works at Elkhart High School.

Foreman was recently featured on ESPN discussing student-athlete safety during extreme heat.

She and the other Beacon athletic trainers have been busy collecting heat data from each venue and site this week, consulting with one another, and then having team huddles with school administrators to talk about weather-related adjustments. Those changes are then communicated to the students and families.

“Athletic trainers are passionate about keeping their student-athletes as safe and healthy as possible at all times. We give extra attention to both preventing and managing heat illnesses,” Foreman says. “Just as a coach and student-athlete prepare for competition well in advance of game day, so do athletic trainers. We take every precaution to prevent heat illness.”
