Eye on Health: Skipping regular checkup is breast cancer survivor’s biggest regret
Lori Denman is a wife, mother, grandmother and a breast cancer survivor.
She knew both her grandmothers had developed breast cancer in their 80s and tragically passed away. So when the 60-year-old learned of her diagnosis, she was caught off guard.
And she immediately regretted the decision she had made to skip a checkup during a lapse of insurance.
“I wish whether I had insurance or not I had gone in, because then it would have been a simple procedure and not a big surgery,” she said about missing that checkup and shrugging off symptoms.
Dr. Omer Toor and his Beacon Medical Group oncology team cared for Denman, who went through eight rounds of chemotherapy and a year of immunotherapy. After her mastectomy, she opted for reconstructive surgery with Beacon plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Adam Hauch.
“Lori’s an inspiration for women in our community,” Dr. Toor said. “A cancer diagnosis is tough. It changes your life. You need a good team beside you.”
