Beacon orthopedic surgeon helps patient feel relief from chronic hip pain

It all started with a simple home improvement project.

Marisa Allen Ranges’ husband was changing some floor tiles. Rushing to answer a phone call, Maria slipped and fell on the wet tile. “I didn’t think anything of it,” she said.

But she developed a pain in her left hip that just wouldn’t quit.

“I could walk up and down the hall at work. I needed a cane. It was bone to bone,” Marisa said. “It was so painful. If I sat down too long, my leg got stiff. At the doctor’s office, I’d rather stand.”

For Marisa, a juvenile justice caseworker who routinely travels to court and must sit long periods of time for her job, the pain and stiffness were truly disruptive to her everyday life. She used over-the-counter products to no avail. Prescriptions medications didn’t help, either. She even tried hip injections, but the relief didn’t last.

Finally, she was referred to Dr. Gregg Ebersole, orthopedic surgeon, Beacon Bone and Joint Specialists.

Working with Dr. Ebersole was a relief for Marisa, not only because he really listened to her, but they also decided together whether surgery was the right choice. His support helped her feel confident in the decisions that were made.

“Marisa and I embarked on a journey of collaborative decision-making, where her input was integral every step of the way,” Dr. Ebersole said. “Together, we assessed her options, focusing on her ultimate goal of improving her quality of life. We concluded that a hip replacement surgery would best serve her needs, empowering her to reclaim mobility and alleviate discomfort.”

Before leaving the hospital after surgery, Marisa had to be able to walk — a frightening thought so soon after getting a new joint. But her care team was there to help.

“The first time I was standing up, it was scary. The girls at the hospital were wonderful helping me walk with a walker,” she said.

Marisa was quickly on the road to healing. After just two weeks of recovery and physical therapy, she was able to walk without using a cane. It took about three weeks before she could easily get in and out of the car and felt comfortable going out without her walking cane.

It’s the change in her quality of life that stands out the most.

“From day one it was amazing. I got my life in order,” Marisa said. Not only is she glad she decided to having the surgery, she’s grateful that she found a great medical team right her in our community.
