Medical Minute: Beacon pediatrician discusses new study about peanut allergy and children

Twenty years ago, parents were advised not to give their infants peanut butter products due to concerns that it could increase their risk of developing food allergies.

Today, the advice has changed significantly.

Dr. Shahir Okhovat, pediatrian at Beacon Medical Group Pediatrics Bristol Street in Elkhart, explains how a new study from the National Institutes of Health found that introducing peanut butter to infants may actually lower their risk of developing peanut allergies into adolescence.

This study expands earlier research that only followed children up to age 5. Among the key findings:
  • Early introduction of peanut butter reduces allergy risk;
  • Especially important for infants as early as four to six months, particularly those with severe eczema or egg allergies;
  • Long-term benefits;
  • Guidance for parents, caregivers and pediatricians.

Learn more about the study and the latest guidelines from pediatricians as Dr. Okhavat, who is accepting new patients, shares his insights in the video below.
