Memorial Hospital first in region to implement advanced imaging technology for spine and orthopedic patients

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Memorial Hospital of South Bend has become the first hospital in northern Indiana to implement the EOS® Imaging System, introducing a new standard of care for pediatric and adult spine and orthopedic patients.

EOS® Edge technology combines low-dose radiation with advanced AI software to deliver highly accurate X-ray images, reducing radiation exposure by up to 85 percent compared to traditional systems. This state-of-the-art technology enables our clinical experts to more precisely diagnose, treat and monitor patients with orthopedic conditions and degenerative spine disorders.

The EOS® Imaging System represents a significant advancement in medical imaging, demonstrating our commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology to enhance our patient-centered care,” said Derek Taylor, Director of Imaging Services, Memorial Hospital. “By being the first to offer this technology in northern Indiana, we are ensuring our patients receive unparalleled care with significantly reduced radiation exposure. This system’s precision and accuracy will dramatically enhance how we diagnose and treat spinal and orthopedic conditions.”

Unlike traditional X-ray technology, EOS® Edge captures calibrated, full-body images in a comfortable, open-cabin environment with the patient either in an upright, weight-bearing position or in a specifically designed chair. The high-resolution 2-D and 3-D images will enable our team to measure anatomical angles and dimensions with unprecedented precision, leading to more accurate diagnosis of spinal and musculoskeletal conditions and more personalized treatment plans.

By substantially reducing radiation exposure and modulating the dose along the patient’s body, EOS® Edge minimizes long-term health impacts for patients while providing superior image quality for our team. These detailed images and data will enhance our understanding of patient alignment during diagnosis, increase the precision of surgical planning and enable comprehensive post-operative assessment of treatment effectiveness.

We are confident that EOS® Edge will significantly improve care for patients requiring precise X-ray imaging, from initial diagnoses through post-surgical evaluation,” Taylor said. “This demonstrates our commitment to providing our patients with the most advanced care available while prioritizing their safety and comfort.”
