Description

An outdated term for fibrocystic breasts, which are composed of tissue that feels lumpy or ropelike.

Overview

With fibrocystic breasts, changes in the breasts often vary with the menstrual cycle. The changes are not symptoms of a disease. The exact cause isn't known. But experts think that hormones such as estrogen play a role.

Symptoms

Symptoms of fibrocystic breast changes can include pain, tenderness and lumpiness in the upper, outer area of the breasts. Breast symptoms tend to be worst just before periods and get better afterward.

Treatments

Treatment for fibrocystic breasts can include medicine to ease pain and procedures to drain or remove any breast cysts. It also may help to wear a firm support bra, limit caffeine and eat less high-fat food.
